Switching of light with light using cold atoms inside a hollow optical fiber

چکیده
We demonstrate a fiber-optical switch that operates with a few hundred pho-tons per switching pulse. The light-light interaction is mediated by laser-cooled atoms. The required strong interaction between atoms and light is achieved by simultaneously confining photons and atoms inside the microscopic hollow core of a single-mode photonic-crystal fiber.

Efficient all-optical switching using slow light within a hollow fiber.
We demonstrate a fiber-optical switch that is activated at tiny energies corresponding to a few hundred optical photons per pulse. This is achieved by simultaneously confining both photons and a small laser-cooled ensemble of atoms inside the microscopic hollow core of a single-mode photonic-crystal fiber and using quantum optical techniques for generating slow light propagation and large nonli...
متن کاملA single hollow-beam optical trap for cold atoms
We present an optical trap for atoms which we have developed for precision spectroscopy measurements. Cold atoms are captured in a dark region of space inside a blue-detuned hollow laser beam formed by an axicon. We analyse the light potential in a ray optics picture and experimentally demonstrate trapping of laser-cooled metastable xenon atoms.
متن کاملOptical switching with cold atoms
At room temperature and atmospheric pressure, atoms travel hundreds of meters per second and collide frequently with one another and their surroundings. Although this unceasing thermal motion keeps us warm, it causes serious problems for anyone trying to probe the internal state of an atom. To reduce the deleterious effects of atomic motion, experimentalists often rely on optical fields to trap...

متن کاملCold-atom physics using ultrathin optical fibers: light-induced dipole forces and surface interactions.
The strong evanescent field around ultrathin unclad optical fibers bears a high potential for detecting, trapping, and manipulating cold atoms. Introducing such a fiber into a cold-atom cloud, we investigate the interaction of a small number of cold cesium atoms with the guided fiber mode and with the fiber surface. Using high resolution spectroscopy, we observe and analyze light-induced dipole...
